Samsung announces quad-core chip for Galaxy S phone

Samsung hints at what's coming for Galaxy S3 phone with new quad-core chip.

Electronics heavyweight Samsung will put quad-core silicon in its next Galaxy smartphone, upping the ante for mobile performance.
The Exynos 4 Quad integrates four processor cores and is built on the company's cutting-edge 32-nanometer manufacturing process. The chip will run at speeds above 1.4GHz, the company said in a statement today.
As a yardstick, the third-generation iPad uses older 45-nanometer Samsung manufacturing tech and its central processing unit is dual-core (though the graphics processing unit is quad-core). And most multi-core smartphones and tablets on the market today are dual-core.
Samsung's new chip -- targeted at both tablets and smartphones -- will land initially in the next Galaxy smartphone. "Already in production, the Exynos 4 Quad is scheduled to be adopted first into Samsung's next Galaxy smartphone that will officially be announced in May," Samsung said in a statement.
Samsung's statement continued. "The...processor is a crucial element in providing our customers with a PC-like experience on mobile devices. Samsung's next Galaxy device, which will be officially announced soon, offers uncompromised performance and ground breaking multi-tasking features."
That next Galaxy phone would likely be the Galaxy S3.
Other Exynos 4 Quad highlights that presage Galaxy S3 features:

  • Full-speed video: uses HD 30 frame per second video hardware codec engine for 1080p video recording and play-back; also, includes an embedded image signal processor interface for a high-quality camera and an HDMI 1.4 interface.
  • Speed jump: Owing to its 32-nanometer tech, the Exynos 4 Quad has "two times the processing capability over the 45-[nanometer] process based Exynos 4 Dual while consuming 20-percent less power," Samsung said.
  • Ready to plug into new phones: Exynos 4 Quad is "pin-to-pin compatible" with the Exynos 4 Dual, allowing smartphone and tablet suppliers to adopt the new solution without additional engineering or design efforts.
  • Based on ARM Cortex A9 design: Based on the current Cortex A9 tech from ARM. The latest and greatest ARM tech is called Cortex A15 but those chips won't emerge as commercial products for a while yet.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus & Ice Cream Sandwich Review

Google employs more than 20,000 people worldwide and the number of them working on Android are in the single digit percentage range. Google's business is search, but it has always had aspirations of more. Android isn't just a chance to capitalize on mobile search for Google, it's also an opportunity to grab power in the next era of personal computing. If you believe that smartphones will eventually replace mainstream PCs, who wouldn't want to be to smartphones what Microsoft was to PCs in the early 1990s?
Previous versions of Android have been cautious, evolutionary steps along a path to being a more open/flexible alternative to iOS. Starting with Honeycomb (Android 3.0) however, Google began to step out of the shadow of its competitors and really start to define Android as a mobile computing platform. Honeycomb was limited to tablets but its successor, Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0), would bring unification to Android across both tablets and smartphones.
Today we look at both ICS and its launch vehicle, Google's Galaxy Nexus.

The Android vs. iOS Debate

It's very clear to me now more than ever that Apple and Google have completely different goals with their mobile OS strategies. Excluding the unclear strategy behind Chrome OS, Android is pretty much Google's primary operating system. The unified tablet/smartphone strategy behind Ice Cream Sandwich makes sense because for Google to succeed in the OS business it needs to deploy Android on everything from smartphones to notebooks. We've already seen the strengths in having a smartphone platform with a strong app ecosystem. Things become even more appealing if you have a phone, tablet and PC that all run the same OS and apps. As Android is Google's one-size-fits-all operating system, it needs to have a broader and slightly more ambitious focus than iOS otherwise it risks losing the race in the long run.
Apple is in a different position. It already has a successful desktop/notebook OS that is continuing to grow. While iOS has been a runaway success for Apple, the Mac OS X platform is a solid option for any user who needs more than their iPhone or iPad can provide. The two OSes may converge or at least borrow heavily from one another, but in the interim they can remain independent. If you need more of a computing experience Apple is happy to sell you a Mac. If you want the it-just-works appliance experience in your phone or tablet, Apple has a whole bunch of iPhone/iPad configurations to offer you.
ICS isn't a step towards iOS. If anything it proves that Google is committed to its own trajectory. Android is an OS that, although more closed than many would like, still allows more flexibility than iOS. You can sideload apps not purchased in the Market. The file system isn't completely hidden from you. You can even override the default zoom level on web pages. Apple and Google both pour tons of time and research into figuring out the best way to do something. And, to be honest, I feel like Apple generally does a better job of "getting it" for the very mainstream consumer. Rather than attempt to make the perfect mold however, Google gives you one that's a bit more flexible.
I've said this before but I do believe that Apple is trying to deliver more of an appliance experience, whereas Google is providing you with a modern take on a traditional computing experience. If the appliance is a smartphone, then both approaches are equally capable - it's just a matter of personal preference.
What's new in ICS really falls into one of three categories:
  1. Improvements in UI frame rate due to OpenGL ES rendering (non-skia) path
  2. UI tweaks
  3. New features
Nowhere in this list is a fundamental change in the way Android works. I feel that this is a very important point to understand and likely the cause for lots of disagreement when it comes to just how impressive (or not) ICS is.
ICS is smoother, more polished and has its own set of new features that make it a significant step forward for Android. What ICS is not however is an outright clone of iOS. If you prefer the iOS experience to Android, ICS will do nothing to change your opinion. If all you were missing from Android was a smoother UI, then its fourth major release should be almost everything you could ask for.

Draw Something is more than a social game, it's a window into the minds of others

Draw Something is more than a social game, it's a window into the minds of others Draw Something is more than a simple Pictionary clone. While it stems off the same concept that has been used over and over, there are no time limits and no punishments for incorrect guesses. These aspects, along with the one-on-one setting, remove any sense of competition from the game. The resulting experience is less a game, and more an insight into individual personalities. I met Mr. Frost in one of my first matches. Over the next few days, we played when we had time. We're about 50 rounds in so far, and we haven't missed a word yet. Our pictures started as silly little sketches consisting of only black and primary colors and evolved into vivid scenes and occasionally hilarious situations. I didn't just get to sit back and watch my own ability grow—my artistic ability has indeed grown, at least by Draw Something standards—I also got to watch someone else grow alongside me. We both started off with the same crude style, but as we played, those styles grew apart. I've found I use a lot of color to illustrate my words, while Mr. Frost puts more emphasis on detail. Neither is better than the other, but it leads to completely different drawings for the exact same word. For “EMINEM”, I'd draw a bunch of candies, while Mr. Frost would likely try drawing the rapper himself. Mr. Frost and I have learned a lot about each other through the way we play the game. I've never met the guy, but based solely on word selection and the guesses we make, I can't help but think we'd get along in real life. When it's your turn to draw, you get the choice between three words Each one is more difficult than the last, but also nets you more coins if your partner guesses it. Mr. Frost and I seem to move straight toward any video game-based word we come across. And if we're stumped, we both often make guesses about the video game universe. Even when those guesses are wrong, we just rearrange the letter bank until we find a suitable word that fits the allocated space. Mr. Frost and I think alike, and our synergy has grown as we've played the game. My experience from Mr. Frost came from a random pairing. You can choose to play with friends, and that's a completely different experience. When I linked my Facebook account and created a new game, I was able to see which of my friends were already playing, and I was given the option to invite others. As new friends picked up the game, I got to see shades of my past. While I've earned enough in-game coins to unlock various colors and shades, my friends were stuck with the same four options I had at first. Without saying (or writing) a word, I was able to show them some of the tricks I've learned, and they – perhaps inadvertently – showed me some new things. Draw Something Draw Something Linking your Facebook account isn't the only way to play. You can use email or a username to find people you know too. You can play a bunch of games at the same time, and you'll want to, because your bank fills with coins each time you get a word correct. These coins can be used to purchase more colors or buy bombs that eliminate incorrect letters from the letter bank. The bombs are nice, but I only found good use for them when my partner really struggled with the drawing. On the other hand, colors enrich the experience, but you'll find a lot of creativity from those who have only the default choices. There's both a free and a paid version of the game. Both versions allow play between iOS and Android users, and they both play identically. The paid version eliminates ads, adds about 2,000 more words, and gives you 400 free coins (you can also opt to buy coins separately if you'd rather not wait to earn them). Those who play a lot may want to put down money for the paid version, as there are only so many times you can stand having to draw Shrek. Draw Something is neither a challenge nor a competition. It's a social game in its purest form. Whether you're playing a close friend or a complete stranger, you learn about who they are. How somebody approaches Draw Something tells a lot about them. Perhaps they have an eye for detail, maybe they enjoy a good joke, or maybe they play in a way that’s completely unique. There are some bad eggs that try to earn a quick coin by simply writing their word. Like the rest, that action alone gives us an insight as to what kind of person we're playing with. The lack of competition and challenge will understandably be a turnoff to many. The rest will discover pure, innocent fun, and an amazing window into the minds of others. gamezebo.com Download free version of Draw Something on Samsung Galaxy Nexus here :  f.1mobile.com/mobile_software/puzzle/com.omgpop.dstfree_1003006.apk

How to create a masterpiece: Draw Something tips, hints, and cheats

How to create a masterpiece: Draw Something tips, hints, and cheats
Everybody and their mother is playing OMGPOP's rather excellent iOS and Android sketch-'em-up Draw Something, which managed to nab a shiny Gold Award at review. To be fair, it's ruddy addictive. The aim of the game, in case you're one of the three people who's yet to play it, is to grab your durable iPaintbrush (your finger) and create a Rolf Harris-esque masterpiece from scratch. Your opponent then has to guess what your frantic scribblings actually are using the jumbled letters that are displayed on-screen. And that's pretty much it. Oh, before we forget, check out what we think are 20 of the best Draw Something creations. They're absolutely fabulous, dahling. Drawing up a storm In Draw Something, you take on multiple opponents in asynchronous matches, which you can drop in and out of at will. If an opponent successfully guesses your creation, you get the chance to guess theirs. A match continues until somebody gives up. When it's your turn to sketch, you're greeted by a screen that contains three different words to choose from - all of which vary in difficulty: Easy, Medium, and Hard. The amount of coins you earn depends on the difficulty level you choose to undertake. If you don't think you can transform any of the words into a glorious picture, you can use your limited supply of bombs to get three fresh choices. Or you can simply close the app, remove it from your multitasking dock, and then fire it back up again to be greeted with three new words. The choice is yours. Purchase at least one new pack of colours (by tapping the '+' symbol next to your existing colour palette) using the coins you save using that cheeky cheat in the above paragraph. We suggest you stump up the cash for the Mardi Gras package early in the game, for it features a nice selection of colours that you don't have access to from the off. Take your time while you're drawing: this game is a marathon, not a sprint. Don't just blob a ton of colour onto the playing field and hope for the best. A thin black pencil and a little outline can go a long way. Finally, try to colour the objects you're drawing with a high degree of verisimilitude - it makes life a lot easier. Have you ever bumped into a purple hamster in the real word? Thought not. The guessing game There aren't many tips we can give you for guessing your opponents's drawings. To be frank, some of them are shocking. However, Draw Something does give you a helping hand. For starters, the game lets you know exactly how many letters make up the word that your partner is attempting to convey. It also gives you 12 jumbled-up letters with which to construct this word, so you're not entirely on your lonesome here. If you're still stuck, bombs can be used to remove the letters that you don't really need. Cheaters never (read: always) prevail If you're still left scratching your head after you've exhausted the above avenues, there's only one thing left to do: cheat. We don't normally condone cheating here at Pocket Gamer Towers, but there are plenty of ways to dirty your Draw Something hands out there on that thing we call the internet. Firstly, you can simply head on over to the Win Every Game website, which is a website designed to help Scrabble players get one over on their intellectually gifted opponents. Just enter the letters that you've been presented with in Draw Something on this website, and it'll give you a list of anagrams - it's that easy. Alternatively, you can head on over to Apple's App Store and download the aptly named Draw Solver Pro - Cheat at Draw Something! application for the small sum of 69p / 99c [buy]. This application allows you to upload a screenshot of the picture you're trying to guess - complete with the letters Draw Something has given you - and almost instantly receive the correct answer. Just remember: the above method of cheating guarantees your passage into hell. You can download Draw Something as a Universal app on iOS in one of two flavours (or both, if you wish): a 69p / 99c ad-free version [buy], and a free-to-play ad-supported version [download]. Likewise, you can download a free Android version of Draw Something for, well, free [download]. Or you can shell out 62p for the ad-free Android edition [buy].

Draw Something Tops 50 Million Downloads in 50 Days

Draw Something The runaway hit mobile game Draw Something has been downloaded more than 50 million times in just 50 days, according to Zynga. The game passed the 50 million download mark on Wednesday, after launching just two months ago, Zynga said. In its first six weeks alone, the Pictionary-like game, which is available for iPhones and Android devices, had already been downloaded more than 35 million times. "We believe it's not only the fastest-growing original mobile game of all time – 50 days to hit 50 million downloads — but one of the fastest growing web sensations that we’ve seen," Zynga said in a statement. Zynga last month bought Draw Something developer OMGPOP for an estimated $180 million, plus another $30 million for employee retention payments. As part of Zynga, the 40-person team at New York-based OMGPOP will now focus on building new mobile games and continuing to develop its existing titles. "If you haven't played [Draw Something] already I highly recommend that you check it out, it's super fun," David Ko, chief mobile officer of Zynga, said last month on a call with reporters. The game, which is available for free or $0.99 for the version without ads, also just regained its spot as the top paid app in the App Store, knocking off Angry Birds Space. It also currently sits atop the top free and top grossing lists. Since it was launched, more than 6 billion drawings have been created, Zynga said. Interested in some more fun facts about Draw Something? Well, the day the game launched, users created three drawings per second, Zynga said. And, at its peak, Draw Something users generated 3,000 drawings per second. The most popular words are starfish, pregnant, Hangman, six pack, and boom box while the least popular word is latrine. pcmag.com Download free version of Draw Something on Samsung Galaxy Nexus here :  f.1mobile.com/mobile_software/puzzle/com.omgpop.dstfree_1003006.apk

Samsung Galaxy S III press photo leaked in invite

What might be the actual Samsung Galaxy S III or the most interesting fake we’ve seen all year has appeared on the web tonight, this included in a press event invite set for May 22nd. The odd nature of the event invite is not specifically in the tell-tale signs we’d expect: the type setting looks legitimate, the format appears correct – it’s the timing that we’re thinking might not stick. Is this therefor the real Samsung Galaxy S III, or simply a photo of a leg of a metal chair made to fool us all?

The event teased in this invite says May 22nd in London, United Kingdom. This is odd in itself as surely Samsung would write London, England instead of the greater UK. As Ron Burgundy said in his appearance this past week on Conan: “the UK, including England.” Then the date is a bit strange – normally a press event such as this is not scheduled out so very far ahead – usually a couple weeks is the max amount of time we get before a reveal.
Tip man and notorious supposed holder of a Galaxy S III, or so he says, Eldar Murtazin has commented on the photo saying “My comment about this sgs3 pic….hmmm no comments :-) what do you think? Real of fake?” This of course could mean anything coming from Murtazin, but certainly isn’t something you should dismiss without a second thought.
Note that this image appears to have been posted on several Korean sites before any USA portals picked it up – NavInside, Yahoo Korea, FooHoo (Tistory personal page). We’ll keep you up to date if it turns out this really is just a hunk of chrome or a real live Samsung device hopefully soon – stay tuned!

10 Million Samsung Galaxy S III Units Already Pre-ordered?

For some reason we witnessed a lull in Samsung Galaxy S III rumors – the unannounced flagship of the South Korea-based company. Today we here something rather odd about Samsung Galaxy S III – 10 million units have been already pre-ordered world wide.
Samsung Galaxy S III is expected to rule the high-end league of Android-powered smartphones. The HTC One X reviews were released in the wild, and it seems that the terminal is not good enough. I haven’t got my hands on HTC’s quad-core smartphone yet, so I can’t share my opinion about it. Samsung shipped out 10 million Galaxy S II units in 5 months after the launch, so the pre-order number was for sure well bellow the Samsung Galaxy S III figures.
The information regarding Samsung Galaxy S III pre-order comes from Eldar Murtazin, the Russian blogger who became famous after most of the tech rumors started by him turned to be true. Who exactly made so many pre-orders, since Samsung Galaxy S III is not available for pre-order yet? It seems that they all come from retailers and carriers interested in having Samsung Galaxy S III on their shelves as soon as it hits the market. Rumor has it that Samsung’s Android-powered flagship release date was scheduled for mid-April or late May.
In June Samsung will hold an event in London where everybody thought Galaxy S III will be introduced. But after Samsung CEO, Lee Kun-hee, announced that the smartphone will arrive sooner than we expected, it was clear that the London-based event is not related to the Samsung Galaxy S III announcement, but with the Olympic Games, Samsung supports.
Rumor has it that Samsung Galaxy S III will come with a 4.7-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a 16:9 screen ratio, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Samsung confirmed that their proprietary quad-core chipset, dubbed Exynos, will be placed inside their high-end terminal. It is speculated that the CPU will be clocked at 1.5 GHz.

Samsung Galaxy S III: another date, another pic

It's not been the best of years so far for Samsung, has it? Android Ice Cream Sandwich update delays, the Galaxy Tab 2 (or the “that's it?” tablet, if you prefer), and the painfully long Galaxy S III launch build-up.
It's that last one we're dealing with here, although the headline kind of gave it away. A new leak has emerged with a fresh new “press pic” and a claimed UK launch date of May 22.

That's a date we've heard before, of course, but that tells us nothing on its own – it could be confirming a previous rumour that was correct, or simply copying one that wasn't.
As for the pic, it certainly looks enticing – but to these eyes it also looks decidedly fake and regardless of the rather curvacious style of the phone itself, the image style just isn't consistent with Samsung's usual style.
The wording is also a little suspect. We can look past “Fast. Vivid. Slim. What's your Smart life?” as just some overly enthusiastic – if a little clumsy – PR guff. But “New Generation Coming”? What's that all about?
Overall, it gives us enough doubt to declare that this one is almost certainly a fake. But it is interesting that a couple of months ago, when it first became clear that the Galaxy S III wasn't going to launch at Mobile World Congress, a launch date only at the end of May was laughed off as wishful thinking – no doubt from iPhone fans looking for a chink in Samsung's smartphone armour.
Considering we're well into April now and there's still no real sign of anything much happening, we suspect most people would now happily take May 22 as a good result.

google nexus review

The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is the world's first phone to run Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and comes with a plethora of top end tech, including a huge but still massively high resolution screen.
There are some gadgets in geek-world that are announced and we just cannot wait to touch. Nokia's N95, the original iPhone, the T-Mobile G1 and Palm's first Pre. And the Galaxy Nexus fits firmly in that category.
The big selling point here is not so much the handset – it's what powers the Galaxy Nexus. Google has redrawn its Android OS in probably the biggest overhaul since it launched exactly three years ago.
Ice Cream Sandwich fuses together last year's Gingerbread OS for phones and Honeycomb for tablets and gives us a whole new, futuristic Android device to get to grips with.
Samsung galaxy nexus review
On top of that, the specs include a fantastic Super AMOLED HD screen, Dual-Core 1.2GHz processor, HSDPA, 5MP camera and NFC support, to name a few.
The Nexus itself is fairly big. With dimensions of 135.5 x 67.9 x 8.9mm, it's marginally bigger than Samsung's other flagship handset, the Galaxy S2. It's also a little bit heavier at 135g compared to the latter's 116g. Not that it feels larger although you can tell you are not using an iPhone 4S.
Samsung galaxy nexus review
The front is probably as minimalist as you can get. All black with no buttons at all (we'll explain more in the interface section about that.)
Samsung galaxy nexus review
In fact, all you have on the front is the screen, front facing camera and the brightness sensor plus a cheeky little light beneath the screen that you don't even know exists until you get an email and it begins to pulsate.
The sides are fairly unremarkable with power/standby on the right, volume on the left along with three charging pins (for a dock accessory), nothing up top and the bottom housing the charge/sync socket and headphone jack.
The whole handset has a curved shape we last encountered on the Galaxy S but it's not too severe.
Samsung galaxy nexus review
The rear takes its design cues from the S2 with a snap on cover that feels slightly coarse to give a good grip. It has both Google and Samsung branding on.
You won't find an SD slot on the outside. Or indeed, the inside. Ridiculously, this – the flagship Google handset which is so set up as a media device – has been crippled by having NO expandable memory. Words fail us. And they may fail you when you realise that 16GB internal storage is your lot.
Samsung galaxy nexus review
But the screen, when lit up, looks fantastic. Its 4.65-inches with a resolution of 720 x 1280, giving a ppi of 316. It really is super sharp. We would have expected nothing less with Samsung's mobile displays among the best out there but it's cracking for internet and video.
There is no doubt about it – this is a premium handset and is up there with the iPhone 4S and Nokia Lumia 800 in terms of marketing position.
Samsung galaxy nexus review
If you want one, you'll have to spend the cash and commit to upwards of £41 a month to bag a handset with no upfront charge. Sim-free will set you back around £520 though at the time of writing, the launch of unsubsidised models had been pushed back until the start of December.
